Kicking Hope

Drink to me with thine eyes, and I will pledge with mine. Or leave a kiss but in the cup. And I'll not ask for wine.

A tiny little spark of hope.
It lives inside of me.
In one corner of my cracked heart.
One wonders why it’s still there.
Why pain and disappointment,
Didn’t kill it off a long time ago.
Yet, there it is, bright and alive.
And kicking me from time to time.
Encouraging me to do things,
That I really had no business doing.
Come on, try it! You never know…
Most of the time it ends with,
The crushing humiliation of failure.
I know that this might happen.
And yet I do it, nonetheless.
Sometimes I wish this kicking hope,
Would sparkle itself out.
Just go away and leave me alone.
For it causes me more pain,
Than pain ever did.

  1. Believe it or not, I know this feeling. I refuse to let hope die though, and in fact I’m doing all I can to nourish it and make it grow. Failure doesn’t have to hurt. I love the saying: “If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger.” Well, I’m gettin pretty darn strong! I not only don’t worry about failure or pain, I laugh at it. HA! I’m still here, and I’m gonna try somethin else! NANNER NANNER!

uh-oh… ol’ chuck got carried away again… hang in there miss kitten

Oh, and by the way… that’s a real good poem!

    • Thank you, Charles. Yes, despite the pain it causes me I’m glad that little hope is still alive. If it didn’t kick me from time to time then I know I’d probably never write any new poetry. And I always try the things I know I probably shouldn’t because there’s a tiny voice inside me telling me I could be absolutely awesome at this thing. Most of the time this is not the case, but every now and then I try something and turn out to be genius at it.

I’m definitely not a genius at curling. Ouch.
