Why does life have to be so difficult? Why can’t people get along? Why do we hate, and why do we kill? Why do we hurt those we love, and allow ourselves to be hurt? Why do we seek our own happiness while denying another’s? Why does the grass always seem greener on the other side? Why are mountains so hard to climb? Why do I feel despair when I should feel joy? Why?
Most of these questions seem rhetorical but I’ll give it a go.
Human beings thrive on conflict. Without problems to overcome, we become restless. Our lives lose meaning. Many people have a hard time understanding the nuances and complexities in relationships. They don’t see their own role in the problems and conflicts they help create. Everything is always someone else’s fault.
We hate because we love. They are two sides of the same coin. Just like true good cannot exist without true evil. We hurt the ones we love for complicated reasons. Maybe they have hurt us and we want them to hurt too.
As for why we seek happiness at the expense of another’s happiness, again, that comes down to emotional immaturity and selfishness. One should never consider oneself wholly responsible for someone else’s happiness or unhappiness.
We are explorers, John. We are hardwired to look over that fence or across that ocean or on the other side of that mountain, for something better, something better. It’s in our DNA. We cannot help but wonder if there really is something better out there. Again, because we are restless, not content with what we have, needing conflict in our lives.
Mountains are not hard to climb if one has the right tools with which to climb them.
You feel despair because you are a human being, John. I know that it seems like you’ll never be happy or cheerful again, but you will be. You will feel joy again. And it will be all the sweeter because of this despair you’re feeling now.
Oh this is good, very good. Thanks for responding, that meant a lot to me.
Yeah. Change, growth. Nothing is static. Nothing stays the same. Still, fuckin’ hell eh? Sometimes you just have to step off the ride for a minute and catch your breath. We always get back on though, because, well, what the wise lady said. 😉
Hahahah, yes, the wise lady is right.
