Fred the Monster

I awoke to the sound,
Of something breathing,
Underneath my bed.

A muffled sound of,
Of something heaving.
Or is it in my head?

The cat’s asleep,
So it’s probably,
A small monster named Fred.

He might not eat me,
Or the cat,
If he’s already fed.

Should I get up,
And offer him,
A piece of stale bread?

But then I look,
Outside and see,
That I have been mislead.

The breathing sound,
Is really someone,
Raking leaves instead.

(Happy Halloween)
